DAY TRIPPING IN ATHENS

We are back from a very lovely trip away to Athens and Paros. I love visiting new places but we only had one day before we then headed off to Paros for the wedding of the year. We had a jam packed day full of things to do and places to see in Athens. When looking back over our stories it looked like we had spent several days there because of the outfit changes after our afternoon nap (we had a night flight!) But we always try to cram as much into our city breaks as possible. I thought I would write a little about how we go about doing this and you can then apply to your holiday.

Research

It all starts with the research! Now I have to hold my hands up and say this time around I actually didn’t do much on the research side for Athens. But normally what both me and Joe do is write down what we both want to see and do while away, then compare and figure out what is our top priority. This time Joe was super organised and found some great hidden gems. The best find was a local seafood restaurant called Atlantikos which was located on a backstreet of Athens and was definitely one that the locals ate at. We had a full meal and drinks for €20! We wouldn’t have found these places if we didn’t do our research before getting there.

Google Maps

After figuring out our top places, we plot them all on Google Maps. We save all our destinations on the app and then we can plot our day trip around the city. So for Athens we started the day early at Acropolis to miss the crowds, plus it meant we could walk down from the hill which Acropolis was into the city. Stopping off on the way at a famous coffee shop Taf and a kebab place called O Kostas for something to eat. It sounds like we stick to a strict plan but to be honest because we have all the spots highlighted on Google Maps it means we can always refer back to them and figure what’s close by when wandering around a city.

Backpack

Like when you are planning for a day out at a festival, I find it so much easier to carry a little backpack around rather than a handbag. Luckily for me Joe carried his backpack with all the essentials for wandering around. Water ✔️ sun cream ✔️ sunglasses ✔️ portable phone charger ✔️ hat ✔️ (mainly for my hair not to go yellow in the sun) and tissues ✔️. I am actually on the hunt for one for Glastonbury so I’ve linked a few below I’m loving from the sales.

Comfortable Shoes

This one is a no brainier but still there are some shoes or sandals I always think are super comfy, then walk half a day in and my feet start to hurt. This time I had a pair of sandals on that I bought last year and worn to death last summer so I know they have been worn in. Unfortunately my Birkenstocks had to be thrown away as I had worn them that much the leather had split but I have to say once they are broken in they are the best sandals for walking all day in. I’ve left links for top walking sandals below.

I hope you liked our take on a mini break and how we plan our holidays. I hope it’s been helpful.
